Important information on coloured contact lenses

Cosmetic Coloured Contact Lenses

When fitted, worn and cared for properly, coloured contact lenses can provide a safe and unique way to enhance your appearance.

We are aware that it is possible to purchase coloured contact lenses from various retail fashion outlets and market stalls. For public health reasons this is illegal in some Australian states and is expected to be in all states at some time in the future.

It is important to remember that all contact lenses including coloured lenses (even if they aren't worn to correct your vision), are medical devices and should only be prescribed and dispensed by a licensed optometrist.

Consumers who buy lenses from any other source other than a qualified optometrist, without receiving proper fitting, instruction and follow-up care, are putting themselves at unnecessary risk of eye injury. We therefore urge all consumers to only wear contact lenses while under the supervision of a licensed optometrist, as improper use of lenses has in some cases led to serious ocular complications requiring medical treatment.

In addition, it is important that you don't share your contact lenses with anyone. Sharing contact lenses may spread micro-organisms that could result in serious eye health problems such as corneal ulcers, scarring and permanent vision loss.
